GenAssist develops MyoSponge, a patented biomaterial designed to restore muscle function in patients with severe muscle trauma caused by car crashes, gunshot wounds, falls, and other serious injuries. When muscle loss is too extensive for the body to repair on its own, it leads to chronic weakness, scarring, and disability. MyoSponge provides a structured, bioactive environment that supports the infiltration of muscle progenitor cells and blood vessels, promoting new muscle formation. Like ivy growing through a lattice, stem cells from the body move into MyoSponge where the multiply and mature into new muscle. Unlike traditional grafts, MyoSponge is designed to integrate with the patient’s tissue and degrade as new muscle develops. Our work is based on 7 published papers and aims to provide a practical treatment option for individuals suffering from severe muscle trauma. With support from an NSF SBIR, GenAssist recently began its first study in a large animal model of muscle trauma.
